In the passages read, "das Es" names one psychical province. Two wordings need comment.
Freud characterises the province in four ways, and these often occur together in the same passage. This entry sets them out separately as four senses for the sake of exposition. That division is the entry's own construction [ii]; the text does not draw it.
The term is introduced in 1923 for the domain «das sich wie ubw verhält» [GW XIII:251], and it is named after Groddeck's usage [GW XIII:251]. From 1923 the processes in the Es are given a character of their own [GW XIII:273]. In 1940 they are named primary process: «Die Vorgänge, die an und zwischen den supponierten psychischen Elementen im Es möglich sind (Primärvorgang)» [GW XVII:128]. In 1933 the Es is explicitly presented as the new name for the former systematic unconscious [GW XV:78-79]. In 1940 it is defined by its inherited content [GW XVII:67].
A reader must not miss a distinction in two parts.
In the passages read (1923 to 1940), "das Es" names one psychical province, which Freud introduces in Das Ich und das Es (1923) as the psychical domain into which the Ich continues and which "behaves as unconscious", naming it after Groddeck's usage. The glossary sets out four senses, but they are four characterisations of that one province and often occur in the same passage, so the division into four is the glossary's construction and not Freud's. On our reading, Sense 1 is the frame and Senses 2, 3 and 4 are further definitions of that province: Senses 2 and 4 meet in 1933, where Freud says the Es has other properties than being unconscious, and Sense 3 coexists with Sense 1 from 1923, where the Ich draws its Über-Ich from the Es in the same sentence as the hereditary Es (that this is the Es of the same individual is our reading). The texts give three reasons for the division, which they do not rank: an insight of Groddeck's about the passivity of the Ich (1923, on our reading of the sentence), the ambiguity of the quality "unbewußt" (explicit in 1933 and tied to 1923 only on our reading), and the different laws of process in Ich and Es (1926, 1939). On origins, Freud in 1923 credits Groddeck with the name and that insight and supposes in a hedged footnote that Groddeck followed Nietzsche; in 1926 he justifies the name from ordinary speech without naming Groddeck, and in 1933 he credits only the name, to Nietzsche's usage and Groddeck's suggestion; the pages report no definition of the Es by either, and the theoretical placing is presented as Freud's own. Sense by sense, the decision to stop using "unbewußt" in the systematic sense is Freud's own (Sense 2), and an interlocutor's equation of the Es with "das sogenannte Unterbewußtsein" is rejected (1926); for Senses 3 and 4 the pages credit no other author, and in 1933 Freud names the philosophers' thesis that space and time are necessary forms of mental acts only to say the Es is an exception to it; in 1926 unnamed voices align the Es with "the demonic in us" and want to make the weakness of the Ich against the Es a pillar of a psychoanalytic Weltanschauung, and Freud resists that use but neither adopts nor discusses the word "dämonisch" for the Es; the 1938 fragment Some Elementary Lessons credits Lipps with the thesis that the psychical is in itself unconscious but does not contain the concept of the Es. Senses 1, 3 and 4 are kept to 1940, Sense 3 being hedged in 1923 and softened in 1940 even as it becomes the defining content, while Sense 2 last appears in 1939; the texts read do not say whether Sense 2 was given up, that inheritance replaced it as the definition is only a conjecture, and several tensions stay open, for instance over where the original libido lies and whether the pleasure principle rules only in the Es. A reader must not confuse the Es with the unconscious as a quality, since Freud calls it a grave error to think the conscious/unconscious opposition coincides with the Ich/Es division, large parts of the Ich being able to stay permanently unconscious; nor with the repressed, which is only a part of the Es and set apart by its genesis; nor with the ordinary pronoun "es", or with a picture of Ich and Es as two separate armed camps, which Freud concedes may often arise but rejects as the initial situation of repression; and the hereditary Es is to be kept apart from the remnants of self-experienced traumas that act from the Es and from the Über-Ich, which represents the past taken over from others.
Senses. 1. The province of which the Ich is a part (1923, 1924, 1926, 1933, 1940): the larger psychical whole of which the Ich is the part changed by the external world. 2. The province that takes over the systematic "unbewußt" (1923 on our reading, 1926, 1933 explicitly, 1939; absent from the 1940 Abriß pages read): the new name for what was formerly called the system Ubw. 3. The hereditary Es (1923 and 1940 only; nothing on it in the 1924, 1926 and 1933 texts read, and in 1939 inborn contents are not assigned to the Es): the carrier of inherited content, hedged in 1923 and the defining content in 1940, where it is also softened. 4. The province with its own mode of process (1923, 1926 in both texts, 1933, 1939, 1940): a province whose processes run by laws other than those of the Ich, named primary process in 1940.

The entry is drawn from the long entry below, which gives each sense with Freud's words, dates and pages.
The four senses are four defining characterisations of one province. This entry separates them for exposition [ii], but the text does not keep them apart.
Each characterisation has its own defining sentence and its own dated arc. That is the only reason for setting them out separately.
In Freud's words. [GW XIII:251] [to call the being that starts from the system W and is at first preconscious the Ich, but the other psychical domain, into which it continues and which behaves as unconscious, the Es, following Groddeck's usage.] - «das Ich ist der durch den direkten Einfluß der Außenwelt unter Vermittlung von W-Bw veränderte Teil des Es» [GW XIII:252] [the Ich is the part of the Es that has been changed by the direct influence of the external world, mediated by W-Bw.] [GW XVII:68] [Under the influence of the real external world around us, a part of the Es has undergone a special development.]
What it means. The Es is the larger psychical whole, and the Ich is the part of it that has been changed by contact with the external world.
The texts also characterise the Es by its own mode of process: no organisation, no contradiction, no negation, no time, and the primary process. This entry sets that characterisation out separately as Sense 4.
In 1923 Freud presents his drawing of the apparatus as an aid. He says the drawing's contours «allerdings nur der Darstellung dienen, keine besondere Deutung beanspruchen sollen.» [GW XIII:252]. This statement concerns the contours of that drawing.
The 1926 Laienanalyse says two things about the spatial picture.
Read together, «wirklich» means taking the spatial representation seriously. It does not withdraw its status as an auxiliary representation. This reading is an interpretation [ii], licensed by GW XIV:221 and GW XIV:223. RECONNECT.
When and where. - Das Ich und das Es (1923). The term is introduced in chapter II. Chapters III to V elaborate it in three ways: - the Es is the starting point of object cathexes, which Freud introduces as an assumption: «Späterhin kann man nur annehmen, daß die Objektbesetzungen vom Es ausgehen» [GW XIII:257]; - the Es is the reservoir of libido, stated in a footnote: «Als das große Reservoir der Libido, im Sinne der Einführung des Narzißmus, müssen wir jetzt nach der Scheidung von Ich und Es das Es anerkennen.» [GW XIII:258]; - the Es is the place where «Eros und Todestrieb kämpfen in ihm» [GW XIII:289]. - 1924. The two short papers apply the province to illness: «die Neurose sei der Erfolg eines Konflikts zwischen dem Ich und seinem Es» [GW XIII:387]. The paper limits what it expects of this formula: «Auch wird unsere äußerste Erwartung nicht weiter gehen, als daß diese Formel sich im Gröbsten als richtig erweise.» [GW XIII:388]. - 1926. Die Frage der Laienanalyse restates the province as «ein anderes seelisches Gebiet, umfangreicher, großartiger und dunkler als das Ich» [GW XIV:222]. - 1933. - 1940. The Abriß calls the Es «Den Kern unseres Wesens» [GW XVII:128] and derives the Ich from a part of it [GW XVII:68].
In the passages read, only the part-whole relation stays constant across these texts. The tie of the drives and of the pleasure principle to the Es is qualified more than once: - 1923. «Dabei unterliegt aber auch das Ich der Einwirkung der Triebe wie das Es» [GW XIII:268]. In the same work, the Ich is said to follow the warning of the pleasure principle in its anxiety reaction [GW XIII:287]. - 1926. The Ich uses the pleasure principle against a drive process in the Es: «so braucht es bloß ein Unlustsignal zu geben, um seine Absicht durch die Hilfe der beinahe allmächtigen Instanz des Lustprinzips zu erreichen.» [GW XIV:119]. - 1940. Neither basic drive is to be confined to any one province [GW XVII:71], and the pleasure principle rules «Aber nicht nur das Es allein.» [GW XVII:129].
See Tensions held for these qualifications.
In the fragment "Some Elementary Lessons" (written 1938), the concept was not found in the pages read [GW XVII:139-147].
Freud's own or taken over. In 1923 Freud credits Groddeck with more than the name. He reports Groddeck's repeated emphasis that the Ich behaves essentially passively and that we are lived by unknown, uncontrollable powers: «daß das, was wir unser Ich heißen, sich im Leben wesentlich passiv verhält, daß wir nach einem Ausdruck „gelebt“ werden von unbekannten, unbeherrschbaren Mächten.» [GW XIII:251]. The Ich/Es division is then proposed «ihr Rechnung zu tragen» [GW XIII:251]. Reading "ihr" as this insight of Groddeck's is an interpretation [ii]. It is licensed by Freud's wish to give «der Einsicht Groddecks ihre Stelle in dem Gefüge der Wissenschaft» [GW XIII:251].
What Freud reports is an insight about the passivity of the Ich before unknown, uncontrollable powers. He gives no definition of the Es by Groddeck. The theoretical placing is presented as Freud's own.
A footnote supposes, with a hedge, that Groddeck followed Nietzsche: «Groddeck selbst ist wohl dem Beispiel Nietzsches gefolgt» [GW XIII:251]. The same footnote describes Nietzsche's usage as one «bei dem dieser grammatikalische Ausdruck für das Unpersönliche und sozusagen Naturnotwendige in unserem Wesen durchaus gebräuchlich ist.» [GW XIII:251].
In 1926, in the pages read, the name is justified by popular speech, with no mention of Groddeck: «Das unpersönliche Es schließt sich unmittelbar an gewisse Ausdrucksweisen des normalen Menschen an.» [GW XIV:222]. In 1933 Freud credits only the name, to Nietzsche's usage and Groddeck's suggestion [GW XV:79].
In 1926 unnamed voices align the Es with «das Dämonische in uns» [GW XIV:123]. They want to make the weakness of the Ich against the Es a pillar of a psychoanalytic Weltanschauung. [GW XIV:123]. He neither adopts nor discusses the word "dämonisch" for the Es.
Abandoned or kept. The sense is kept. In 1924 Freud recommends keeping «die vorgeschlagene Gliederung des seelischen Apparates in Ich, Über-Ich und Es weiter im Auge zu behalten» [GW XIII:391], and the Abriß of 1940 still uses it [GW XVII:67-68, 128-138].
An editorial note describes the 1938 fragment: «Dieses Bruchstück ist in der zweiten Hälfte 1938 in London geschrieben» [GW XVII:140]. In the pages read the fragment does not reach any division of the psyche into agencies, so its silence shows no abandonment [ii].
Not to be confused with. - The ordinary pronoun "es". At [GW XIII:250], for example, «Es kann treibende Kräfte entfalten» refers to "dies Andere", not to the concept. - A picture of two separate opposed powers as the starting point of repression. He then concedes that such a situation may arise, and rejects it only as the initial situation: «Das mag oft zustande kommen, aber es ist gewiß nicht die Eingangssituation der Verdrängung; in der Regel bleibt die zu verdrängende Triebregung isoliert.» [GW XIV:124].
In Freud's words. [GW XV:78] [Very well, then let us no longer use "unconscious" in the systematic sense, and give what was so designated until now a better name that can no longer be misunderstood.] - «da die Unbewußtheit nicht sein ausschließender Charakter ist.» [GW XV:78] [since being unconscious is not its exclusive character.] - «Wir müssen eine andere Unterscheidung einführen, die nicht mehr qualitativ, sondern topisch und, was ihr einen besonderen Wert verleiht, gleichzeitig genetisch ist.» [GW XVI:202] [We must introduce another distinction, which is no longer qualitative but topical and, what gives it special value, at the same time genetic.]
What it means. Here the Es is defined by its place in the theory of the qualities of consciousness. It is the name for what was formerly called the system Ubw. The new name is needed because the quality "unbewußt" no longer marks off a single system, since parts of the Ich are unconscious too.
The Es stays unconscious as a quality: «alles, was im Es vorgeht, unbewußt ist und bleibt» [GW XIV:225]. Unconsciousness is not what defines it, however: «vom Es noch andere Eigenschaften anzugeben, als daß es unbewußt ist» [GW XV:81]. Qualities and provinces do not pair off one-to-one: «daß die drei Qualitäten der Bewußtheit und die drei Provinzen des seelischen Apparats sich nicht zu drei friedlichen Paaren zusammengefunden haben» [GW XV:79].
When and where. In 1923 chapter I declares the quality ambiguous: «Er wird zu einer vieldeutigen Qualität» [GW XIII:245]. The Es is then introduced as what «sich wie ubw verhält» [GW XIII:251]. Reading this as the same move that 1933 makes explicitly is an interpretation licensed by the sequence of GW XIII:244-251 [ii].
In 1926 the Laienanalyse separates the two oppositions [GW XIV:225]. In 1933 the renaming becomes explicit [GW XV:78-79]. In 1939 the same replacement of quality by topography recurs. In that text a genetic distinction appears inside the Es: «bleibt als das eigentliche Unbewußte im Es zurück» [GW XVI:203]. The last appearance in the passages read is 1939. In the Abriß pages used (1940), the Es is never called unconscious [GW XVII:67-72, 126-133, 135, 136, 138].
Freud's own or taken over. The decision to stop using "unbewußt" in the systematic sense is Freud's own [GW XV:78]. The new name, however, follows Nietzsche's usage and a suggestion from Groddeck: «In Anlehnung an den Sprachgebrauch bei Nietzsche und infolge einer Anregung von G. Groddeck heißen wir es fortan das Es.» [GW XV:79]. An interlocutor's equation of the Es with «das sogenannte Unterbewußtsein» [GW XIV:225] is rejected. In the 1938 fragment Lipps is credited with the thesis that the psychical is in itself unconscious, but no Es is mentioned [GW XVII:147].
Abandoned or kept. The texts read do not say. The 1938 fragment attributes unconsciousness to «Das Psychische an sich» [GW XVII:144] and to no agency. Whether this marks a shift away from Sense 2 would be a conjecture [iii].
Not to be confused with. It must not be confused with the unconscious as a quality, which extends into the Ich: «das Ich ist wesentlich vorbewußt (virtuell bewußt), aber Anteile des Ichs sind unbewußt.» [GW XVI:202]. It must also not be confused with the repressed: «Das Verdrängte ist dem Es zuzurechnen und unterliegt auch den Mechanismen desselben, es sondert sich nur in Hinsicht der Genese von ihm ab.» [GW XVI:203].
In Freud's words. - «Somit beherbergt das erbliche Es in sich die Reste ungezählt vieler Ich-Existenzen» [GW XIII:267] [Thus the hereditary Es harbours within it the residues of countless Ich-existences.] - «Die älteste dieser psychischen Provinzen oder Instanzen nennen wir das Es; sein Inhalt ist alles, was ererbt, bei Geburt mitgebracht, konstitutionell festgelegt ist» [GW XVII:67] [The oldest of these psychical provinces or agencies we call the Es; its content is everything that is inherited, brought along at birth, constitutionally fixed.] - «sein Es mit seinen vererbten Tendenzen die organische Vergangenheit» [GW XVII:138] [his Es, with its inherited tendencies, the organic past.]
What it means. The Es is the carrier of inherited content. In 1923 this is derived, with hedges, from the experiences of the Ich.
In 1940 inheritance becomes the defining content, and it sets the Es apart from the Ich. Es and Über-Ich are said to represent the past, while the Ich is shaped by what it has itself experienced: «dass sie die Einflüsse der Vergangenheit repräsentieren, das Es den der ererbten, das Überich im wesentlichen den der von Anderen übernommenen, während das Ich hauptsächlich durch das selbst Erlebte, also Akzidentelle und Aktuelle bestimmt wird» [GW XVII:69].
When and where. - 1923, chapters III and V. In chapter V a sentence places phylogenetic acquisitions and the deposits of earlier Ich-formations in the Es: «in Beziehung zu den phylogenetischen Erwerbungen des Es und macht es zur Reinkarnation früherer Ichbildungen, die ihre Niederschläge im Es hinterlassen haben» [GW XIII:278]. What is thereby related to these acquisitions is the Über-Ich; that reading of the pronoun «es» rests on the surrounding argument about the Über-Ich [ii]. The sentence refers back to earlier exposition: «wie wir bereits ausgeführt haben» [GW XIII:278]. The Ich draws on the experiences stored in the Es, with the Über-Ich mediating: «Mit Hilfe des Über-Ichs schöpft es in einer für uns noch dunklen Weise aus den im Es angehäuften Erfahrungen der Vorzeit.» [GW XIII:285]. - 1924, 1926 and 1933. The texts read contain nothing on this sense. - 1939. Inborn contents are raised as «Eine neue Komplikation» [GW XVI:204], but they are not assigned to the Es. - 1940. Inheritance becomes the definition [GW XVII:67]. Phylogenetic influences are said to be present «die irgendwie im Es vertreten sind, in für uns noch nicht fassbaren Formen» [GW XVII:131].
Freud's own or taken over. The pages credit no other author with this sense.
In 1923 the Es is already part of the argument before the hypothesis of «Totem und Tabu» is cited. On GW XIII:264 the Es is the place of what the history of the species has left behind: «Was die Biologie und die Schicksale der Menschenart im Es geschaffen und hinterlassen haben» [GW XIII:264]. In the passages read, this is the first statement that the Es holds what the species' history left behind. The same sentence goes on to say that the Ich takes this over through the formation of the ideal and lives it through again individually.
The sentence that cites the hypothesis concerns how religion, morality and social feeling were acquired: «Nach der Hypothese von „Totem und Tabu“ wurden sie phylogenetisch am Vaterkomplex erworben» [GW XIII:265]. It stands within a context that already involves the Es. The next page asks who acquired them: «Wer hat seinerzeit Religion und Sittlichkeit am Vaterkomplex erworben, das Ich des Primitiven oder sein Es?» [GW XIII:266]. The answer to that question leads to the hereditary Es [GW XIII:267]. That the hypothesis is thereby tied to the hereditary Es is an interpretation [ii]. The page does not name the author of the hypothesis.
Abandoned or kept. The sense is kept but qualified. It is hedged in 1923: ego-experiences «setzen sie sich sozusagen in Erlebnisse des Es um» [GW XIII:267], and when the Ich draws its Über-Ich from the Es, it «bringt es vielleicht nur ältere Ichgestaltungen wieder zum Vorschein» [GW XIII:267]. It is softened in 1940: «Solche Allgemeinheiten können nicht leicht allgemein richtig sein.» [GW XVII:138].
Not to be confused with. - The remnants of self-experienced traumas. These also act from the Es: «Ihre Erinnerungsreste sind dann unbewußt und wirken vom Es aus.» [GW XVI:204]. - The Über-Ich. It represents the past taken over from others [GW XVII:69].
In Freud's words. [GW XIII:273] [We know this trait as characteristic of the processes of cathexis in the Es.] [GW XV:80] [For the processes in the Es the logical laws of thought do not hold, above all not the law of contradiction.] - «Die Vorgänge, die an und zwischen den supponierten psychischen Elementen im Es möglich sind (Primärvorgang), unterscheiden sich weitgehend von jenen, die uns durch bewusste Wahrnehmung in unserem intellektuellen und Gefühlsleben bekannt sind» [GW XVII:128] [The processes possible at and between the supposed psychical elements in the Es (primary process) differ widely from those known to us through conscious perception in our intellectual and emotional life.]
What it means. Here the Es is characterised by how its processes run, set against the Ich. Freud presents this as a characterisation beyond being unconscious: «Sie sehen übrigens, daß wir in der Lage sind, vom Es noch andere Eigenschaften anzugeben, als daß es unbewußt ist» [GW XV:81]. Of the little that is known of the Es, Freud says: «das meiste davon hat negativen Charakter, läßt sich nur als Gegensatz zum Ich beschreiben.» [GW XV:80]. It is most of what is known of the Es, not the Es as such, that can only be described in contrast to the Ich.
When and where. - 1923. The trait in question is an indifference to the path of discharge: «Dabei ist eine gewisse Gleichgültigkeit, auf welchem Wege die Abfuhr geschieht, wenn sie nur überhaupt geschieht, unverkennbar.» [GW XIII:273]. The same looseness was first noticed in the primary process: «Die nämliche Lockerheit haben wir zuerst an den Verschiebungen des Primärvorganges in der Traumarbeit bemerkt.» [GW XIII:274]. The text asserts a sameness of trait, not an identity of the Es with the primary process. - 1926. In the passages read, both 1926 texts carry this characterisation. - Hemmung, Symptom und Angst states the lack of organisation: «daß das Ich eine Organisation ist, das Es aber keine» [GW XIV:124]. - Die Frage der Laienanalyse says, in a related wording, that the Es lacks the Ich's striving for unification: «dieser Charakter fehlt dem Es, es ist — sozusagen — zerfahren» [GW XIV:223]. The same text says that contradictions stand side by side in the Es: «im Es gibt es keine Konflikte, Widersprüche, Gegensätze bestehen unbeirrt nebeneinander» [GW XIV:223]. Asked in the same text what makes the separation necessary, Freud answers «es gelten im Ich andere Regeln für den Ablauf seelischer Akte als im Es» [GW XIV:223]. - The pages give no order of priority between the two texts and do not say whether the two wordings mean the same. - 1933. The coexistence of contradictions receives the explicit form of an exemption from the laws of logic [GW XV:80]. The negative characterisation grows: «Es gibt im Es nichts, was man der Negation gleichstellen könnte» [GW XV:80]; «Im Es findet sich nichts, was der Zeitvorstellung entspricht» [GW XV:80]. The energy of the Es is described, with a hedge, as more mobile: «Es scheint sogar, daß sich die Energie dieser Triebregungen in einem andern Zustand befindet als in den andern seelischen Bezirken, weit leichter beweglich und abfuhrfähig ist» [GW XV:81]. Displacement and condensation are called the processes «die für das Es charakteristisch sind» [GW XV:81]. - 1939. «Für die psychischen Vorgänge im Es gelten ganz andere Gesetze des Ablaufs und der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung, als die im Ich herrschen.» [GW XVI:203]. The pages read do not name these laws. - 1940. The processes in the Es are named primary process [GW XVII:128], and «auch gelten für sie nicht die kritischen Einschränkungen der Logik» [GW XVII:128]. In the first-chapter pages of the Abriß that were read [GW XVII:67-72], no characteristics of these processes are given.
Freud's own or taken over. The pages credit no other author with this characterisation. In 1933 Freud cites a thesis of the philosophers as something to which the Es is an exception: «auch nimmt man mit Überraschung die Ausnahme von dem Satz der Philosophen wahr, daß Raum und Zeit notwendige Formen unserer seelischen Akte seien.» [GW XV:80]. He names the source of the knowledge: «das wenige, was wir von ihm wissen, haben wir durch das Studium der Traumarbeit und der neurotischen Symptombildung erfahren» [GW XV:80].
Abandoned or kept. In the passages read the sense is kept from 1923 to 1940. It is attested in 1923 [GW XIII:273], in 1926 [GW XIV:124; GW XIV:223], in 1933 [GW XV:80-81], in 1939 [GW XVI:203] and in 1940 [GW XVII:128].
Not to be confused with. - The unconscious as a quality. Freud says that the listener now recognises the possibility that parts of the Ich and the Über-Ich are unconscious without these characters: «Sie erkennen die Möglichkeit, daß Teile vom Ich und Über-Ich unbewußt seien, ohne die nämlichen primitiven und irrationellen Charaktere zu besitzen.» [GW XV:81]. In 1923 the looseness of discharge is called both a feature of the Es [GW XIII:273] and «Verhalten des Unbewußten» [GW XIII:274]. The text does not say whether the Es and the unconscious are identical here.
Sense 1 is the frame, and Senses 2, 3 and 4 can be read as further definitions of the same province [ii]. Sense 1 describes how that province relates to the Ich [ii].
The texts give several reasons why the division is needed at all. Most are stated in their own words; where the link is the entry's, it is marked. - 1923, Groddeck's insight. The division is proposed to take account of that insight: «Ich schlage vor, ihr Rechnung zu tragen» [GW XIII:251]. Reading "ihr" as the insight is [ii] (see Sense 1). - 1933, and by interpretation 1923, the ambiguous quality. In 1933 the region cannot be called the system Ubw «da die Unbewußtheit nicht sein ausschließender Charakter ist.» [GW XV:78]. In 1923 chapter I declares the quality "unbewußt" ambiguous [GW XIII:245], but those pages do not name the Es. That this ambiguity is a reason for introducing the Es is an interpretation [ii], as in Sense 2. This reason is Sense 2. - 1926 and 1939, the laws of process. Asked «was nötigt Sie dazu?» [GW XVI:203]. This reason is Sense 4.
The texts do not rank these reasons, so any ranking would be an interpretation [ii].
Sense 2 grows out of the problem of the ambiguous quality posed in 1923 [GW XIII:245] and is made explicit in 1933 [ii]. Senses 2 and 4 meet in 1933, where being unconscious is said not to be the only property of the Es: «vom Es noch andere Eigenschaften anzugeben, als daß es unbewußt ist» [GW XV:81].
Sense 3 coexists with Sense 1 from 1923. In the same sentence as the hereditary Es, the Ich draws its Über-Ich from the Es: «wenn das Ich sein Über-Ich aus dem Es schöpft» [GW XIII:267]. Reading the hereditary Es as the Es of the same individual whose Ich draws on it is an interpretation [ii]. In the 1940 pages read, Sense 3 enters the defining sentence and Sense 2 is absent. That Sense 3 replaced Sense 2 as the definition is a conjecture to be tested on the unread parts of the Abriß [iii].

| «das Ich ist der durch den direkten Einfluß der Außenwelt unter Vermittlung von W-Bw veränderte Teil des Es» | GW XIII:252 | the Ich is the part of the Es changed by the direct influence of the external world through W-Bw | Part-whole relation (Sense 1) |
| «Somit beherbergt das erbliche Es in sich die Reste ungezählt vieler Ich-Existenzen» | GW XIII:267 | Thus the hereditary Es harbours the residues of countless Ich-existences | First statement of Sense 3 |
| GW XIII:284 | The Es is wholly amoral; the Ich strives to be moral; the Über-Ich can become hypermoral and then as cruel as only the Es | Moral characterisation within the triad |
| «daß das Ich eine Organisation ist, das Es aber keine» | GW XIV:124 | that the Ich is an organisation, but the Es is not | Es without organisation (1926) |
| GW XIV:124 | But on the other hand the Ich is identical with the Es, only a specially differentiated portion of it | Identity and part-whole held together |
| GW XIV:225 | But it would be a grave error to think that this opposition coincides with the division of Ich and Es | The quality-opposition conscious/unconscious does not coincide with the Ich/Es division (parts of the Ich are unconscious) |
| GW XV:78 | Very well, let us no longer use "unconscious" in the systematic sense and give what was so called a better name that cannot be misunderstood | Explicit renaming (Sense 2) |
| GW XV:80 | For the processes in the Es the logical laws of thought do not hold, above all not the law of contradiction | Mode of process (1933) |
| GW XV:86 | so that it can appropriate new pieces of the Es. Where Es was, Ich shall come to be | Therapeutic aim defined by the Es |
| GW XVI:203 | The repressed is to be counted to the Es and follows its mechanisms; it differs from it only in genesis | Repressed inside the Es, distinguished by genesis |
| «Die älteste dieser psychischen Provinzen oder Instanzen nennen wir das Es; sein Inhalt ist alles, was ererbt, bei Geburt mitgebracht, konstitutionell festgelegt ist» | GW XVII:67 | The oldest of these provinces or agencies we call the Es; its content is everything inherited, inborn, constitutionally fixed | Sense 3 as the definition (1940) |
| GW XVII:128 | The core of our being is thus formed by the dark Es, which has no direct dealings with the external world and becomes accessible to our knowledge only through another agency | Late characterisation; knowledge of the Es is mediated |
Loci not read: all texts before 1923; Das Unbehagen in der Kultur (1930); Die endliche und die unendliche Analyse (1937); the remaining chapters of the Abriß and of Hemmung, Symptom und Angst. Because "es" is also the ordinary pronoun, no density scan of the term was possible.
First edition, November 2026. Built from the German text of Freud's Gesammelte Werke only, read source by source; every German quotation was checked against the page it cites. References give volume and page, for example [GW X:291]. English renderings are our own. A mark [ii] means our interpretation of the passages, [iii] a synthesis across texts; unmarked sentences report what the pages say. Each long entry says which texts were read and which were not. Entries are revised as the reading continues; corrections are welcome at contact@llulllab.com.
